People often forget that most of the German troops had no idea about what was going on, they weren’t all fanatic Nazis bent on genocide, they were just regular soldiers who answered the call when their country went to war.

My Opa was one of these men. He was only seventeen when he was drafted into the war, and he walked from France back to his home because he didn’t want to fight. He got shot in the leg by American soldiers, yet still gave my American GI father his blessing to marry my mother decades later. And most of all, he despised Hitler.
A lot of people assume that “German soldier” during WWII meant that you were a fanatical Nazi, and that’s just not the case at all.

THEY LITERALLY DRILLED INTO MY BRAIN ABOUT THE BAD SIDE OF WHAT HAPPENED BUT THEY DIDN’T EVEN MENTION THE FACT THAT MOST OF THE GERMAN SOLDIERS ONLY THOUGHT THEY WERE FIGHTING FOR THEIR COUNTRY NOT TORTURING INNOCENT PEOPLE!! I LOVE GERMANY AND I REALLY WANNA LIVE THERE AND WHENEVER I MENTION IT TO OTHER PEOPLE ALL THEY GO IS WHY DO YOU WANNA GO THERE?! I LOVE IT’S HISTORY AND GUESS WHAT! EVERY! COUNTRY! HAS! IT! DARK! HISTORY!!
